Raccoon from midland area of St. Simon's Island tests positive for rabies

According to reports, a raccoon from the mid-island area of St. Simons Island has tested positive for rabies.

The raccoon was killed by a family dog in the yard. The dog was up to date on its rabies vaccination and received a booster shot. There was no human exposure to the sick raccoon. Several species of wild animals that are native to coastal Georgia – including raccoons, foxes, and bats – can carry rabies.
