Glynn Co. on verge of approving lease to use parking lot at S Harrington Rd

After just over 2 years in the negotiation process, Glynn County is on the verge of approving a new lease with the owners of Village Creek Landing to use the parking lot at the public boat ramp at the end of South Harrington Road on St. Simons.

When the Gowen family purchased Village Creek Landing several years ago from the previous owners, Philip and Charles Berolzheimer, the county commission was unwilling to continue to honor the lease that had been in place with the Berolzheimers.

Former Commissioners Mike Browning and Bob Coleman were the most vocal opposition to renewing the lease with the Gowens. After working with the Gowen’s attorney John McQuigg, Senior Assistant County Attorney Will Worley has a draft lease ready to present to the Glynn County Finance Committee.

Along with the lease McQuigg is asking the county to pay the past due leases for 2019 and 2020 at a cost of $5,400 per year. The lease is a 25 year contract with annual renewals required unless the county chooses not to renew. The rent will remain at $5,400 and then increase $600 every three years. The finance committee meets at 2:00 tomorrow afternoon in the Historic Courthouse and will make a recommendation to the full county commission regarding the lease.
